BECOMING AN INSTRUCTOR : PROCESS

How it works

How long does it take?

Everything is tailored to suit the time you have available to train, but we are still governed by the availability of test dates with the Driving Standards Agency.

As a guide, the waiting time for a test date is:

  • Part 1               2 to 3 weeks
  • Parts 2 & 3       6 to 8 weeks each.

It therefore makes sense to ensure that your training is scheduled with these lead times in mind.

If you need to be teaching and earning quickly we will plan a concentrated programme, alternatively we will plan around your current commitments.

Training will take place on the days you tell us you are available (except Sundays).

N.B.  You cannot accompany a provisional licence holder unless you have held a full UK Driving Licence for 3 years and are over 21 years of age.

Flexible Training

Training can be done in the following areas:

  • Hereford
  • Leominster
  • Worcester
  • Bracknell, Berkshire

The Tests

In order to enter the register of ADI’s you have to pass 3 exams set by the Driving Standards Agency (DSA):

  • Part 1                A theory test of 100 multiple choice questions and a hazard perception test.
  • Part 2                A test of your driving ability (3 attempts allowed)
  • Part 3                A test of your ability to instruct (3 attempts allowed)

You must pass all 3 parts within 2 years of passing Part 1.  Our training programme comprehensively covers the whole syllabus for all three parts and includes all the support materials necessary to enable you to pass first time - we will not ask you to buy extra books, training manuals or visual training aids  - everything you need is included.

The following is a brief summary of what is involved in the exams:

Part 1 - The Theory Test

There are 2 parts to the theory test both must be passed at the same time.

The first part is a multiple choice test covering all aspects of driving split into 4 subject bands.
There are100 multiple choice questions and you choose one answer out of four for each question. The pass mark is 85% with at least 80% scored in each band.

The second part is a Hazard Perception Test (HPT) which consists of 14 video clips with a total of 15 hazards to recognise. The clips feature various hazards e.g. pedestrians, you are judged on the speed with which you recognise the hazard. Each hazard is worth up to 5 marks and you need to score 57/75 to pass. The exams are held in 158 venues around the country the same as the ‘L’  Driver Theory Test, you will know the result the same day.

Part 2 - Test of Driving Ability
You will be tested by a Supervising Examiner ADI (SE) and will be expected to be able to perform the following:

1. Test of Eyesight:

  • Read a car number plate from 27.5m (90ft)
  • The letters and numbers being 79.4mm (3 1/8”) high
  • It will be daylight
  • Glasses or Contact lenses are permitted if worn.

2. Test of Driving Technique

  • Expert handling of the controls
  • Use of correct road procedure
  • Anticipation of action of other road users and taking appropriate action
  • Sound judgment of distance, speed and timing
  • Consideration for the convenience and safety of other road users

The test lasts for about an hour and covers town, country and motorway driving as well as car manoeuvres, i.e. the turn in the road, parallel park etc. You are told the result of your test in the car.

Part 3 - Test of Instructional Ability

As with part 2, an SE ADI tests you and will role play the part of a pupil and will ask you to instruct him. There are two parts to the exam - each lasting about 30 minutes. In the first part the examiner will role play a beginner or partly trained pupil and in the second part he will role play a pupil of, or near, test standard, or a qualified driver needing an improvement in a particular aspect of their driving.
You will be expected to instruct to the level advised by the examiner and you will know the result the same day.
